Is the Acer Aspire One Mini Notebook PC the Happy Medium?

I guess I would have to say that I'm probably one of the last people to jump on the mini notebook PC (or netbook) bandwagon. I've got to tell you when I first looked at one of these things I couldn't figure out what the attraction was. I thought to myself "This is just a sorta kinda notebook or laptop wannabe. Why not just go out and get the real McCoy?" Then I had a chance to use an Acer Aspire One. I changed my mind in a big hurry.

The compact design of the Acer Aspire One is really pretty nice. You don't realize how large a full size notebook really is until you compare it to carting around one of these pint size PCs. You're almost getting "the real McCoy" in size. I mean what the heck; a 10 inch LED backlit screen is nothing to sneeze at. However, even though you're giving up loads in performance (This is not anything close to a high end gaming computer), believe it or not, the size is a huge advantage. Not because how small it is but because of how big it is. Let me explain.

I used to think that I had a mini notebook PC in my pocket. You know, those things we call smart phones. I figured that if I wanted to do some minor or recreational web browsing or check or send emails that that's all I needed. Well, it is if you can effectively see everything you want to see on that tiny screen. It's getting harder for me to do that. I'm at that age where my glasses seem to be getting stronger from year to year exponentially.

This is where the Acer Aspire One excels. Is it a full blown laptop? No it isn't. But it's not just an eBook reader either. With it's 1.6 GHz processor, long battery life, sufficient RAM, WiFi, a 250 gigabyte hard drive and little perks like a webcam and Dolby audio, The Acer aspire makes a perfect travel PC. Want to get a little work done too? It comes with Microsoft Office.

Excellent Value For Money - Gateway NV7915u 17.3 Inch Laptop

Corporate black with silver or chrome trim is quickly becoming a trend for many laptops, however the Gateway NV7915u sets itself apart from the rest by having a fine honeycomb imprint pattern on the cover and a power button on the side of the right hinge. This results in a nice understated design for such an affordable laptop. Build quality is good and solid with a thinner than average side profile. It follows the current trend of offering a large wide-screen chassis to fit the 17.3 inch screen and is slightly lighter at 6.9 pounds.

This leads to the full keyboard which comes complete with a numeric keypad. Thanks to the same wide-screen chassis, there's a lot of space for said keyboard, making typing easy and comfortable. Touch-sensitive hot-keys adorn the top of the keyboard bezel while a recessed matte covered track-pad lays below. The Gateway NV7915u's track-pad takes some getting used to due to the thin track-pad bar button but it does offer multi-touch commands if you want to ignore the bar completely.

As stated earlier, the Gateway NV7915u uses a powerful Intel Core i3 M330 processor along with 4GB worth of DDR3 memory. A large 500GB hard disk drive and DVD burner rounds up the other features along with wireless-N wi-fi, a VGA port, a HDMI port, a network port, four USB 2.0 ports and a multi-format card reader. The laptop uses Intel's new GMA HD integrated graphics and a six-cell li-ion battery.

Performance-wise the Gateway NV7915u delivers enough power to handle any office application, surf the Internet and do some light gaming. While the Intel GMA HD graphics can handle smooth HD video, you are limited to casual gaming at best as 3D first person shooters are definitely out of the question. The laptop is more portable than most desktop replacement units though and comes with a two hour and 35 minute battery life on a single charge, which is just enough for most presentations or watching a full-length movie while on the go.

For its price of below $600 the Gateway NV7915u delivers top-notch performance and well-rounded functionality. This makes it ideal for the mainstream user just looking for a larger laptop to enjoy while corporate users on a budget will also enjoy its solid but relatively lightweight portability.
